Un agradecimiento especial al equipo de Stanford por hacer posible este evento: Ben Moran, Nim Robles, Dan Powell, Nadia Haghani y Alex Donny.
On October 25, 2023 a group of visiting researchers from Stanford organized an outreach event at the local high school, CECyTE Hidalgo Calnali. They explained why they study the fish in Calnali, their motivation for the research, and why their findings are of interest to other scientists. By bringing live fish, they were able to engage students in scientific observation, discuss differences between the males and females, and how two different species hybridize with different levels of success. They also explored healthy versus sick (cancerous) fish and how the health of the river impacts the fish - and have associated human costs. One presenter observed that "The students were very engaged and curious, constantly asking questions about the fish and excitedly making observations to share with the class." Another presenter was impressed at the students' questions and observation skills, especially that the majority of the students understood and drew "practical conclusions from the somewhat abstract idea of genetic interactions leading to cancer."
A special thank you to the Stanford team for making this event possible: Ben Moran, Nim Robles, Dan Powell, Nadia Haghani, and Alex Donny.
