Sr. Clemente Hernández-Cisneros

Clemente se encarga de todo el mantenimiento, las reparaciones, y la infraestructure fisica general en la propiedad. Tambén se encarga del cuidado de los peces en los estanques detrás de la casa cuando los investigadores no están en la estación. Clemente está regularmente en los alrededores del CICHAZ, tiene un amplio conocimiento de la propiedad y la comunidad, y puede ayudar con cualquier pregunta.

Clemente handles all maintenance, repairs, and general physical infrastructure on the property. He also looks after the fish in the ponds behind the house when the researchers are not at the station. Clemente is regularly at  CICHAZ, has extensive knowledge of the property and the community, and can help with any questions.

Johaira Hernández Melo

Johaira ha sido parte del equipo de CICHAZ desde 2019. Apoya el cuidado de los peces y asegura una población de peces próspera; Algunas de sus responsabilidades incluyen alimentar y monitorear a los peces, abordar los problemas de salud de los peces y mantener limpias las peceras interiores. También colabora con otros miembros del equipo en actividades dentro de la estación, como el establecimiento de un sistema hidropónico y el apoyo a las operaciones diarias. Johaira es la primera en recibir la Beca Arnold Rosenthal y Kate Harris de CICHAZ y está trabajando para obtener una Licenciatura en Biología en el Instituto Nacional de México-Campus Huejutla. Ella espera dar un ejemplo positivo a sus tres hijos (¡quienes también están interesados en la investigación en CICHAZ!) Al terminar su carrera, establecer su carrera, ampliar su conocimiento de la ciencia y vivir su pasión por la naturaleza.

Johaira has been part of the CICHAZ team since 2019. She supports fish care and ensures a thriving fish population; some of her responsibilities include feeding and monitoring fish, addressing fish health issues, and keeping indoor fish tanks clean. She also collaborates with other team members on activities within the station, such as establishing a hydroponic system and supporting daily operations. Johaira is the first to receive the Arnold Rosenthal and Kate Harris Scholarship from CICHAZ, and is working towards a Bachelor's Degree in Biology at the Instituto Nacional de México-Campus Huejutla. She hopes to set a positive example for her three children (who are also interested in the research at CICHAZ!) by finishing her degree, establishing her career, broadening her knowledge of science, and living her passion for nature!

Magda, domina la cocina Mexicana y los platillos típicos de Calnali por lo que durante nuestras estancias nos sorprende con el uso de ingredientes locales; además de su pasión por la cocina, Magda también alimenta peces y realiza actividades para el mantenimiento de las peceras interiores y exteriores.

Magda is a master of Mexican cuisine and the typical dishes of Calnali; she always impresses visitors with her use of local ingredients. In addition to her passion for cooking, Magda feeds fish and helps maintain the indoor and outdoor fish tanks.

Doña Irma asegura que las toallas y sábanas estén limpias a la llegada de las y los visitantes y mantiene limpias las habitaciones y baños de uso común. Incluso barrerá y desempolvará los cuartos durante su estadía. La lucha con el polvo es quizás el trabajo más difícil en CICHAZ y su trabajo en la estación nunca termina. Si hay muchos visitantes, vendrá cada dos días, pero les pedimos a todos que le faciliten el trabajo limpiando ustedes mismos, tanto como sea posible durante su estadía; ¡se recomienda barrer después de las comidas - las escobas se encuentran en el patio!

Doña Irma makes sure there are fresh towels and sheets waiting for visitors upon arrival and keeps the the common use rooms and bathrooms clean. She will even sweep out and dust rooms during your stay if asked. Keeping up with the dust is perhaps the hardest job at CICHAZ and her work at the station is never done. If there are a lot of visitors, she will come every other day but we ask everyone to make her job easier by cleaning up after yourselves as much as possible throughout your stay - using a broom to sweep up after meals is encouraged (brooms are on the patio)!

Paola Fascinetto Zago

Paola visitó el CICHAZ por primera vez en 2017, después de graduarse como Bióloga y mientras estudiaba su Maestría en Ciencias Fisiológicas en la Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla. Después de esta primera visita, Paola quedó encantada con la magia de la Sierra y Huasteca y la calidez de la gente de Calnali. Ella disfruta mucho de las costumbres y tradiciones de la región, (como el Xantolo, el Carnaval, los Huapangos y, la comida!). Actualmente, Paola está estudiando el Doctorado en Ecología y Biología Evolutiva en Texas A&M University, con un enfoque en Comportamiento Animal y Ecología Evolutiva. Particularmente, está estudiando cómo la personalidad animal moldea el aprendizaje social y, consecuentemente, la elección de pareja. Cuando visita la estación de campo, Paola disfruta mucho compartiendo su conocimiento y experiencia en los eventos de divulgación científica.

Paola started visiting CICHAZ in 2017 after receiving her Bachelor's Degree in Biology and while studying for a Master's Degree in Physiological Sciences at the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla. After her first field trip she found herself drawn to the magic of the Sierra y Huasteca and the kindness of the people of Calnali. She enjoys the customs and traditions of the region (especially Xantolo, Carnaval, the Huapango music, and the food!). Paola is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Texas A&M University, with a research focus on Animal Behavior and Evolutionary Ecology. Specifically, she is studying how animal personality shapes social learning and therefore mate choice. When Paola visits CICHAZ she especially enjoys sharing her knowledge and experience during outreach events.

Dr. Daniel Powell

Dan obtuvo un B.S. en biología de la Southeastern Louisiana University y luego su doctorado en biología de la Texas A&M University. Allí se centró en la dinámica de elección de pareja de los híbridos de la primera generación y la arquitectura genética de los rasgos seleccionados sexualmente utilizando peces cola de espada. Actualmente es investigador postdoctoral en el laboratorio de la Dra. Molly Schumer y sigue trabajando con los colas de espada de la Huasteca. Dan visitó CICHAZ por primera vez en diciembre de 2011 como recluta potencial para el laboratorio de Rosenthal y no ha podido dejar de regresar desde entonces. La estación de campo CICHAZ fue parte integral de su trabajo de tesis y su desarrollo como investigador con conciencia social. Sigue siendo un segundo hogar para él, así como una base de operaciones para su investigación sobre el comportamiento y la genómica evolutiva de la hibridación del pez espada.

Dan earned a B.S. in biology form Southeastern Louisiana University and then his PhD from Texas A&M University in biology as well. There he focused on the mate choice dynamics of early generation hybrids and the genetic architecture of sexually selected traits using swordtail fish. He is currently a postdoctoral researcher in the lab of Dr. Molly Schumer and is still working with the swordtails of la Huasteca. Dan first visited CICHAZ in December 2011 as a potential recruit to the Rosenthal lab and hasn’t been able to stop coming back since. The CICHAZ field station was an integral part of his dissertation work and his development as a socially conscious researcher. It continues to be a second home to him as well as home base for his research involving the behavior and evolutionary genomics of hybridizing swordtail fish.

Baruc Zago Mazzocco

Baruc ha estado trabajando en CICHAZ como ingeniero in situ desde 2019. Llegó por primera vez a CICHAZ cuando una amiga lo invitó a disfrutar de Calnali y la región de la Sierra y Huasteca de Hidalgo. Después, quiso volver a hacer ciencia e involucrarse más con la communidad local. En sus palabras: “Las personas, las tradiciones y la Huasteca me han atrapado”. Baruc disfruta de un buen desafío y tiene la reputación de superar de manera creativa los obstáculos eléctricos y mecánicos. Utilizando un enfoque multidisciplinario, Baruc resuelve problemas relacionados con los sistemas eléctricos y de agua de CICHAZ, y ayuda a los científicos a crear la infraestructura necesaria para sus experimentos. Actualmente, Baruc colabora en investigaciones centradas en la personalidad y el aprendizaje en peces. Baruc estudió Ingeniería Mecatrónica en la Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla (BUAP) y obtuvo su Maestría en Ciencias Fisiológicas en el Instituto de Fisiología de la BUAP.

Baruc has been working at CICHAZ as an on-site engineer since 2019. He first came to CICHAZ when a friend invited him to enjoy Calnali and the Sierra y Huasteca region of Hidalgo. Afterwards, he wanted to return to do science and engage more with the local community. In his words: "The people, the traditions and the Huasteca have trapped me." Baruc enjoys a good challenge and has a reputation for creatively overcoming electrical and mechanical obstacles. Using a multidisciplinary approach, Baruc resolves issues related to CICHAZ’ water and electrical systems, and assists scientists with creating any needed infrastructure for their experiments. Currently, Baruc is collaborating on research focusing on personality and learning in fish. Baruc studied Mechatronics Engineering at the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla (BUAP) and earned his Master's Degree in Physiological Science at the Institute of Physiology at BUAP.

Dr. Molly Schumer

Molly estudió Biología en Reed College, obtuvo su doctorado en Ecología y Biología Evolutiva en Princeton, y ahora es Profesora en Stanford. Ella está interesada en entender la hibridación entre especies desde una perspectiva genética y su impacto en la evolución, con un enfoque particular en las especies de peces cola de espada que son nativas de Hidalgo. Le encanta trabajar con la comunidad de investigadores y con los miembros de la comunidad en el CICHAZ.

Molly studied biology at Reed College, completed her PhD in Ecology & Evolutionary Biology at Princeton, and is now an Assistant Professor at Stanford. She is interested in understanding hybridization between species from a genetic perspective and its impact on evolution, with a particular focus on swordtail fish species that are native to Hidalgo. She loves working with the community of researchers and community members at CICHAZ.

Rhonda (B.S. Carnegie Mellon University, Ed.M. Harvard University y Ph.D. Texas A&M University) estudia la educación STEM informal, la comunicación científica y los impactos de tales esfuerzos tanto en el público como en los científicos. Ella cofundó CICHAZ en 2005 con su esposo, Gil Rosenthal, y juntos se desempeñan como codirectores. Rhonda se siente honrada de ser parte de la comunidad de Calnali y agradecida por poder criar a su familia aquí.
