An ongoing goal at CICHAZ is to operate as sustainably as possible and, as such, we continually look to find new ways to be more environmentally responsible. To date, we have implemented a
number of policies and actions into our regular operations that put us on a path to a more sustainable organization and hope to serve as an example both for the surrounding communities and similar
organizations in Mexico, the U.S. and beyond.
Garden: The CICHAZ property has an expanding organic garden that features a variety of fresh produce that is consumed by visitors to the research station and from which surplus is given away
to local neighborhood families.
Reuse of fish
operations water: Water that leaves the flow-through system of outdoor fish tanks is routed through the organic garden positioned in the backyard just uphill from the Rio Calnali. The water
provides irrigation to a number of vegetable crops and ultimately drains through the soil back to the river from which it came.
paper, cardboard and other items are by-products of operating the field station and by the visiting researchers. Those items that are not reused for scientific or household purposes are
collected and taken to a recycling center in the area.
Total Recycled To Date: 16 kg
Plastic Bottles: 8 kg
Glass Bottles: 8 kg
drinking bottles: A number of visitors come to CICHAZ to conduct field-based natural and social science research, often during hot summer months. We encourage the use of reusable
water bottles during all field work to mitigate the generation of plastic waste as much as possible.
Lighting: All light bulbs used at CICHAZ are either already compact fluorescent bulbs or are being replaced with CFLs as we continue to phase out the use of incandescent lighting.
Projects: Going forward, as funding and opportunity provides, we have a number of projects that we are eager to implement in order to further our goal of sustainability. Examples of two
of those projects are to install a solar water heater and solar panels to offset energy use!
We not only work continually to improve our own environmental responsibility but also incorporate sustainability as one focus of our outreach activities. To read more about that mission, see
our Outreach page.
